XOffice

XWiki Office or XOffice for short is an XWiki.org project that integrates Microsoft Office with XWiki, by:

  • Bringing the XWiki collaboration to Microsoft Office
  • Enabling the Microsoft Office power editing and rich content creation for XWiki

XWord is a Microsoft Office Add-in to view , edit and save pages inside Word. It is great terminal for writing wiki content. I want to improve it so that it will raise the standards for both collaborative platforms and editors. It also opens the process of Office development potentially helping other web platforms to integrate this kind of features.

What XWord misses most is skin and template integration . Also, WYSIWYG skinning will be a nice addition to the XWiki platform.

Here is what I plan to do for the following moths, during GSoC 2009:

  • report and solve XOffice issues on JIRA
  • unit testing
  • some ideas about possible functional testing (considering the fact that XOffice runs inside MS Office)
  • add style support for XWord
    • a style extractor component
    • XWord HTML filters integration with the style extractor
    • a CSS optimizer component
    • server level style data storage
    • local level CSS manipulation
  • port XWord to MS Office 2003

On Styling XWord page you can see the differences between a page edited in XWord and how it actually looks after publishing, without style support.

While working on this project, I'll have to make a lot of functional tests, both on my local wiki and this one. This means that spaces and pages will appear and disappear from this wiki. I'm sorry about that. The important pages related to this project will be linked here, so you can find relevant information easily.
